Continuing on with corn husk

I have a class at the SNI library here on the Allegany Territory this week, making corn husk dolls. I have 6 students attending. We will be dressing them as well. I’m hoping it will be carried on or at least appreciated that much more. Shared my favorite story on why the cornhusk doll has no face. Everyone is coming along swimmingly! If I get a chance I’ll share pictures after tomorrow evening class! Keep making art!

An awesome visit to the City

The demonstration at the National Museum of the American Indian was a success and a most pleasant visit. I wish I had more time to explore. I had zipped around real quick through the exhibits and through the city. Another visit, I guess. I worked alongside Marissa Corwin, who put together an awesome display of the uses of Haudenasaunee White Corn. My part was to work with the public, braiding/weaving cornhusk. For the most part, the young ones picked it up quite nicely, talked about the tension and the similar technique for the cornhusk mat. Showcased my dolls and flower and other items made from the husk. There was other activities that related to the corn and more interactivity for the young folk. Overall, it made for a busy day, meeting and greeted a lot of folks to our culture and to use of white corn.

Normally, I do not post photos of folks but I just wanted to let you know, how grateful I was to work with these fantastic ladies. Both very intelligent and such good natured, we all had a good vibe going. I’m glad we had an opportunity to work together. Gaetana DeGennaro and Marissa Corwin brought me aboard and welcomed me with open arms on this part of my journey. I am thankful.

My husband and I had a chance to have dinner with old friends from up North of the city, we had a great visit. I’ll admit I was exhausted both days afterwards and just wanted to relax. I was thankful for my husbands prior experiences driving in the city. It made for an easy trip. We both agreed another visit was in order with a little planning but it was an awesome experience.

Now, back to the 11 other projects I was working on…enjoy! I’ll be back with more updates. Keep making art.

What’s up…

So, the Smithsonian in NYC has acquired a few of my items! As you’d expect, I’m excited! They will be delivered later this month. Baby moccasins, a mat and corn wash basket. I will also be doing a demonstration with cornhusk at the end of the month on their site. NYC Here I come! Kinda excited and nervous. Hopefully, I’ll get photos of my adventures.

In the meantime, on deck are some dolls and purses. Having to ponder how I want to implement a strap on my purse. Braiding cornhusk and helping my sister with a project. All art related! Doing my thing. Keep smiling.

Keeping the culture alive

In the beginners craft night, we’ve made a small basket out of reed, a few ornaments and a corn husk doll and the strawberry pincushion. Next week we will joining the other Territory to make a small change purse. Sharing and learning has been their main focus of this group of ladies. Here is the basket and the berry. Keep on keeping on.

Cornhusk moccasins

This is one side of a pair of infant cornhusk moccasins. I thought it was too darn cute. I have made them for a commission so they will be gone soon. Just thought I’d share. I’ve got at least 10 other things going on and need to keep going. Later. Enjoy!

Projects delay…

I had good intentions but after all…life gets in the way. I missed my deadline this week due to caretaker duties for one of my older brothers. I’m going to complete them and be happy. What can you do? I will post soon. Preparing for the RTA and a show in a few weeks. I’ve got an exciting opportunity coming in April, but still working out the kinks! Super excited and willing to give it my best. After all life is an adventure, and I’m ready for whatever life throws at me (within reason!) 😉 Just keep swimming. Have a good one, more soon!

Winter Weave

My sister and I traveled to Mentor, Ohio to join the Wildwood Basket Guild at their Winter Weave. We enjoyed seeing ladies we had met last year and meeting new weavers this year. A commonality of weaving from paper, fiber, cordage and reed. It’s always fun to learn new things. Always learning. Here is the “Peripheral” piece with watercolor paper and copper overlay and the “Hiker” Adirondack Pack Basket. Both instructors were fabulous and patience with everyone. We hope to return next year.

2019 so far…

Started out kinda rough with a cold that would not leave me/us for a few weeks, but you manage.

Our little basket group was disrupted for a bit, hanging on. Still making baskets for the babies.

I’ve got an order for the cornhusk mat going to N Y C in April! Kind of excited! More soon!

Did a small vendor day the other week, but the weather has been here and there and sometimes takes a toll on my body. Making some days harder than others.

I’ve been enjoying my cornhusk dolls again. I had a few days in the sun for a brief photo shoot. I have another art project on the side also.

So all told, still busy as ever! I’d love to share with you that one of my students has made a beautiful woven purse. I am so proud of her! I too was doing something similar, I’m not the competitive type. We all have our own style of beading and basket making and are pretty distinct. I’m so glad she is moving forward with the art.

I’m going to be part of the Routes To Art here in the month of May. Utilizing the new building, Onohsa:gwe:de Cultural Center; Seneca Iroquois National Museum as a hub for a few area artists. So, I’m getting things under way for that show as well. Things to come!

So for now, sharing my dolls in the sun! Enjoy!

Make art every day.

My artwork

So excited to have my artwork on the poster for this show! It’ll be there from January through April 2019.

The NRAG has a group of ladies who participated in a quilt also featured here! It will be on display also.
