Sometimes I wonder…

How I’ve managed so far! lol! I have access to an older machine and it’s been stable and dependable but it’s just me, not being either of those. My timing is off and I just can’t make it here. Like I said previously, been busy again. It never really stops.

I had since entered the Ohi’yo Art Market in May and got in, I’m also headed to the Appalachian National Forest Heritage Area for a demonstration/sales and then in June to Eiteljorg Indian Market in June! I’ve got my work cut out for me.

I just returned from VA from a fabulous week of learning with a talented, fun and easy going black ash basket maker, JoAnn Kelly Catsos through the Shenandoah Creates 2024 programming held at the River’s Bend Ranch in Stanley, VA. I completed 6 baskets with her and time spent was very informative and also inspiring. The only way I got to attend was through the CRNY Artist Employment Program through the Seneca Nation here in Allegany. I have been very fortunate to be able to have this opportunity. And I am blessed for my support team.

A lot going on with more to come, no end in sight but I will try to keep you up to date on my happenings. Exciting time…

Here we go again!

Corn husk Wedding Bouquet

I know, I know, I always have to apologize for the lack of time and effort into keeping this page up. I did it last year too. The thing is I am kinda busy. So, Nettie’s wedding went off without a hitch, this is her wedding bouquet out of corn husk that I made her. I did the main table setting and we worked on 10 smaller table top centerpieces as well. She was happy and had a beautiful turn out. I was glad to help her out. Then, I had a few craft shows that I did – so some production work was done. A few shows at the year end with me being a co-curator at the JCC site in Olean and another one at the Fredonia Incubator at Fredonia State. And now, looking into the new year.

I am starting out on a few projects, the first one will be me giving a talk at the Seneca Iroquois National Museum site, I was chosen to start 2018 as the Featured Artist of the Month, yay me! Guess I’m going to be giving a talk about my art on January 18 – showcasing my art and upcoming projects this year.

I’ve been grooving on my corn husk dolls lately and I know I have plenty to do regardless of what art it is.

I also have some displays up in the town of Ellicottiville just up the road here with some of my friends at their shops, one being Cupcaked downtown with Annie Coe and the other with Aurora Light and Bronze with DeBi Bacelli, stop by and see my stuff there as well as at the SINM.

So, a quick look at my girls at the photo shoot out doors. Hopefully, I’ll be better this year, I’m still here kicking and weaving!

Eel Trap Basket at Seneca Fall Festival 2017

The fall brought us together as a community at the Seneca Fall Festival 2017 on the Cattaraugus Territory. Under the Cultural Arts Tent we had fellow artists from across the territories, carvers, quill work, bead work, pottery and traditional basketry.

I worked with a fellow basket maker, Tonia from Mohawk country on a eel trap basket. It was rough splint, no need for a pretty basket in the waters. The technique was new for me and proved a challenge in some regards but finished it by the end of the weekend. We shared with the public and talked of both the fish trap and eel trap. The double wall and the sharp ends – (which prevented them from leaving the trap) was a new one on me. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the learning a new basket and story. I have a few shots to share.

I also rounded up a class with some fellow ladies for their corn wash baskets. They all enjoyed and now know the technique and what needs to go into the making of a basket from step one.

I’ve got other events coming up and will post them soon. Maybe you can stop by and say hello. Always busy, always learning.

Travels and more

Made it to Bar Harbor for the 24th Annual Native American Festival and Basket Maker’s Market. We always have a fabulous visit, got a hike in and the weather was perfect. I love seeing the newest creations and talking with the basket makers from the Land of Dawn People. Congratulated Geo on his most recent win, what an honor for him – he’s a very talented  young one. Glad to see the tradition is passed on to the next generation.

I will be set up at the Seneca Pow Wow this weekend July 15 at the Seneca Iroquois National Museum tent with other artists – we will have demonstrations and talks but I will be in my place from 4-6 pm. So, if you are out in Salamanca stop by and say hello!

Next weekend, I’ll be at the Victor site at Ganondagan for their festival and I will be demonstrating at 1-2 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. A nice time to come out and see the site, meet the artists and watch the dancers.

Maybe I’ll see you out there! Have a fabulous weekend! Our hike around Jordan Pond – my reward was popovers at the Jordan House! Clouds moved in but it was still a lovely afternoon. Enjoy,

Little Cutie

Hi All! Summer has arrived! I have 2 pieces – that I entered into the first ever Hodinohson:ni Art Show at the Seneca Art & Cultural Center at Ganondagan in Victor, NY. I submitted to this event a flour sifter and a market basket and they both got in – (it’s a juried show!) With that said, I’ll be up in competition along with other traditional artists across the Six Nations. It can be a big field or a small field depending on who submitted. I’m excited to be apart of their newest endeavor. I’ll post photos when the show goes up in July. It will be up at the Native American Dance and Music Festival on July 22-23, 2017. I’ll be the featured traditional basket maker at the festival also but my time will be limited as there will be other artists on deck. When I know more of when and where I’ll share and hope you can come out and see the fine artists as well as enjoy some of the events of the weekend.

But, in the mean time, here is a little cutie I made from a replica. She’s rather tiny – only stands 2.5″ tall and 2.5″ wide. Photo size can be deceiving. I really like her. I have a repair on deck and then going to make another mid sized pack basket. I’m planning on a 10″ pack basket soon. Sometime this summer — hopefully! Enjoy! More soon.

North East Basketmakers Guild 2017 Gathering

I attended the NBG Spring Gathering and had a very nice time learning and meeting with other basketmakers from the NE region.

Small world, met a lady originally from Springville, NY  – just up the road from me. Funny thing was her brother had sent the article in the Buffalo News that had featured my friend, Holly John and the Black Ash Trees and the Emerald Ash Borer last year. She said she had written to those in power (3x) on our behalf. She’s a treasure!

Another notable moment, JoAnne Kelly Catsos was in the house! She recalls 30 years ago (approx.) that Mary Adams (remarkable Mohawk Basket Maker) was there and shared her art with them. Seriously, a small world.

I got to work on a few projects and was pleased with the outcome. I still appreciate the refined look and precision of the works that were shared and taught at the event. Also, met some lovely ladies and appreciate their welcoming me aboard! It was a feel good weekend!

Sharing a few shots. Always learning.

In the meantime…beadwork!

March 29, 2017

It’s so hard to capture the true colors of this piece. A peach beaded necklace, I got done between the basket class that I taught this month. Getting another piece done for an exhibition in Buffalo next weekend, but it’s a combination piece of cornhusk dolls, baskets and beadwork.  The idea in your head doesn’t always translate to the final product but I’m willing to try! Keep on keeping on, I’ll touch base again soon.

Mini Market Basket

Measures: 3.5″ w x 7″ l x 7.5″ h including handle – Mini Market Basket

I had a presentation at the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum this past weekend. Where I was part of the Living Artists Day – we had a terrific turnout with visitors from near and far stopping by to say hello and to learn more about our culture. I was more than willing to share my passion and through art I have been able to educate folks from every age range. It was a very busy time but I also managed to finish a basket and begin another one! This is one of the baskets that I will be teaching at the SINM in March. It’s a mini market basket and it’s cute! Always creating. Be back soon with more photos.

Things never go as you plan. So, again I will try to make a better effort on my pages.

Here is a mini tote – my granddaughter names them for me – totey tote! And Hattie Hats!

She made her first basket last year! I was so proud of her!

I made this totey tote this winter. I think cabin fever is setting in and I need to get out. I’ve been busy with beadwork lately as it’s not as hard on my hands/forearms. All is well here in my corner of the world. Going to keep making baskets as long as I can. I will post those works shortly as well. Stay frosty. I mean Toasty!
